Low percentage of asymptomatic Covid-19 patients as per global historical data: Health Ministry

The Union Health Ministry on Sunday said that the percentage of asymptomatic people testing positive for coronavirus is not very big, as per the global historical data, and added that it does not pose as a challenge at the moment.
The health ministry, however, also said that it is nonetheless important to be "aware of this challenge".
"Asymptomatic patients testing positive is not a very big percentage, that is what the historical data across the world has shown us. What is important to us is to be aware of this challenge," Union Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said at the daily media briefing on coronavirus.
"We need to make sure that even asymptomatic patients, if they are at high-risk, are monitored and taken care of and coordinated with," Agarwal said.
The health ministry also advised that if asymptomatic patients are cases of contact-history, then they should remain in home-quarantine, while, those at high-risk, should go to quarantine facilities so that effective monitoring for them can take place.
Health ministry's statement on asymptomatic comes hours after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that all the 186 novel coronavirus cases reported a day before were asymptomatic and the patients did not know that they were infected.
"All the 186 Covid-19 positive cases that were reported yesterday were asymptomatic, they didn’t know they had Coronavirus. This is more worrying," Kejriwal said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, even Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that over 70 per cent of novel coronavirus cases reported in the state were asymptomatic and the patients did not know that they were infected.
In a video message, Uddhav Thackeray appealed everyone to report to the authorities and not hide if anyone shows any symtoms for the deadly novel coronavirus, adding that, however, 75-75 per cent Covid-19 cases are asymptomatic in nature.
"70 to 75 percent positive cases are asymptomatic. At least 52 per cent of the patients are in serious condition. Many have reported in the last stage. I want to appeal that do not hide symptoms," Uddhav Thackeray said.
